The adventure begins!

Today marks day 17 with our little angel Madelyn. As I sit here next to her little isolette I am still in shock that she made her entrance into this world so soon. Sarah and I didn't expect to see her until sometime in May, however little Madelyn had different plans.

Sarah and I had been hoping, praying, and really trying to get pregnant for a number of years with no luck. Once we stopped worrying about it and decided it wasn't going to happen it finally did! Sarah and I were both very excited and once we shared the news with the other kids they were too. In the weeks following we went to doctors appointments for ultrasounds and other tests and things were going along great. The ultrasounds showed a healthy baby girl due on May 28th of 2020. Sarah was excited to start shopping and putting together a registry so we did that as well. Everything was going smoothly until January 28th.

That Wednesday marked the first day of Sarah's extended stay at Summa Hospital with a 5cm dilation and high leak from her amniotic sac. She passed the time doing puzzles, knitting baby stuff, and drinking LOTS of fluid to keep that baby happy. She spent the next 19 days getting Madelyn in the best shape she could in the event that she decided to deliver early. We were hoping to get to 34 weeks. Madelyn had very different plans.

On Saturday February 15th I received a text that I might want to head to the hospital. Sarah was starting to cramp and wasn't sure what was happening. By the time I hit the parking deck she was at 8cm and she was told the baby would be here soon. I have never been so scared in my life as I was at that moment. Sarah seemed calm and ready to go. She calmed me down and made it possible to enjoy the birth of our little girl. Within about 30 minutes of my arrival we gowned up and headed into the operating room to begin the process. The nurses and doctors expected it to be a quick process once they broke her water. Madelyn decided to hang on a little longer and take about 45 minutes to show her beautiful face. At 4:22pm we had a 2lb, 13.4 inch bundle of joy. She was quickly swept away to be cared for and after a short while I was able to meet her for the first time.

The last 17 days have had their ups and downs. We have smiled and we have cried. Doctors, nurses, case managers, respiratory therapists, and many friends have come and gone from our little room. Sarah has spent almost every night at the hospital and I have spent many as well. This is going to be a long journey that is just beginning, but it will all be worth it on NICU graduation day. I will do my best to keep everyone posted on milestones and updates as the days and weeks progress.

Welcome to the world little lady. Mommy and daddy love you
